Q1 2017 \u2013 Welcome to Year Three!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Q1 meetings were held in February for all three groups.\u00a0 Our chapter has grown to 325 members located across the Valley of the Sun.\u00a0 While Ahwatukee and Scottsdale have been gathering for over two years, our West Valley group met for its first donation meeting.\u00a0 We look forward to growing this group and contributing to even more local charities.<\/p>\n

CHARITY IMPACT STATEMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Singleton Moms<\/a> was the Q4 recipient of our Ahwatukee<\/em> donations.\u00a0 Alma Henriques, Care Team Specialist, brought a special guest with her to address our members and friends.\u00a0 Desiree, a single mom who batted late stage ovarian cancer, shared her journey with us and the impact this charity had on her family\u2019s life.\u00a0 View her touching story here<\/a>.\u00a0 Get the tissues ready.<\/p>\n

Meagan Kukowski, Executive Director of Girls on the Run Serving Maricopa County<\/a>, was thrilled to announce they were launching their largest season to date with over 830 girls participating in their programs.\u00a0 Our Scottsdale<\/em> members helped make that possible! GOTR awarded 50 scholarships to girls in need as a result of our member\u2019s generosity. As a special treat, Meagan brought another Meagan with her.\u00a0 Meagan #2 is a junior at Cactus Shadows High School and participated in GOTR\u2019s programs six times throughout her elementary school years. Today, she leads her life based around community all because of the lessons she learned through GOTR.\u00a0 Listen to her story here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

RANDOM DRAW<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ahwatukee<\/em><\/p>\n

JDRF \u2013 Desert Southwest Chapter<\/a> \u2013 Peggy Schapler spoke about the charity\u2019s mission to turn Type 1 diabetes into Type None.\u00a0 Her son, Davis, was diagnosed with T1D when he was two. She described how a donation from our chapter would send local children living with T1D to a special camp that exists specifically to support and benefit them. Children who attend camp gain an immense amount of self-confidence while building valuable friendships with other children living with type 1 diabetes.<\/p>\n

Gabriel\u2019s Angels<\/a> \u2013 Kristine Kassel shared how this organization delivers healing pet therapy to at-risk children, nurturing their emotional development and enhancing the quality of their lives forever.\u00a0 Their purpose is to provide opportunities for at-risk children to build core behaviors needed for a brighter future.\u00a0 These behaviors include trust, empathy, respect, and others consistently lacking in this population.<\/p>\n

Girls on the Run<\/a> \u2013 Cindy Brown nominated this charity who inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. 1,400 3rd<\/sup>-8th<\/sup> grade girls participated in their programs in 2016.<\/p>\n

Scottsdale<\/em><\/p>\n

Teen Lifeline<\/a> \u2013 Julie Krause nominated this nonprofit that provides a safe, confidential, and crucial crisis service where teens help teens make healthy decisions together.\u00a0 Their vision is to impact the devastating problem of teen suicide in Arizona so that any teen, at any time, will have knowledge of and access to Teen Lifeline, its counselors and services.<\/p>\n

St. Joseph the Worker<\/a> \u2013 Jill Zimmerman explained how this organization\u2019s mission is to assist homeless, low-income and other disadvantaged individuals in their efforts to become self-sufficient through quality employment.<\/p>\n

Rescue A Golden of AZ<\/a> \u2013 Kristi Rivera shared how this nonprofit maintains a rescue program for displaced, mistreated or unwanted Golden Retrievers. They provide veterinary care, food and temporary shelter for the dogs with the goal of locating persons and families to provide permanent homes for these dogs.<\/p>\n

West Valley<\/em><\/p>\n

Trivium Prepartory Academy<\/a> – Annann Hong nominated this school that offers a challenging yet rewarding curriculum to sixth graders through high school seniors who are willing to work hard and are willing to develop a deep appreciation for the true, the good, and the beautiful. She described how our donation would help fund their music program and provide needed supplies for music lessons.<\/p>\n

Spina Bifida Association of Arizona<\/a> \u2013 Sharri Runnels explains how this charity promotes awareness of Spina Bifida and enhances the lives of those affected.\u00a0 Spina Bifida is the nation’s most common permanently disabling birth defect. It forms within the first several weeks after conception and its damage is irreversible. Most babies born with Spina Bifida will be lifelong wheelchair users and will experience approximately 20 or more non-elective surgeries.\u00a0 We learned that folic acid before and during pregnancy is key to preventing this birth defect.<\/p>\n

Make-A-Wish Arizona<\/a> \u2013 Crissie Jameson is passionate about Make-A-Wish Arizona who grants the wishes of Arizona children, age 2.5 \u2013 18 years, who have been diagnosed with a progressive, degenerative or malignant condition that has placed the child\u2019s life in jeopardy.\u00a0 Last year, Make-A-Wish Arizona granted a record 365 wishes.<\/p>\n
